The German Shepherd Dog is easily identifiable with their slopping back-end, gorgeous coloring and the look of a dark blanket over their back. Now a mixed breed can be much harder to identify. I have seen many claim that their dog “must have German Shepherd in them because”…I’m not so sure.
German Shepherd Dogs have a strong genetic trait of boldness that seems to cross-over when mixed with other breeds. If you have owned or been around this breed for any time, you’ll be able to identify this trait.
History
Wikipedia informs us that German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep in the late 1800’s. However, because of their strength, intelligence, train-ability and obedience, German Shepherds are the preferred breed for many types of work, including assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military jobs, and even acting. According to Kennelclub.org, the German Shepherd is the second-most popular breed of dog in the United States and fourth-most popular in the United Kingdom according to registrations.
Look
The German Shepherd is a large breed. The breed standard states that females can weigh between 49-71 lbs., and males weigh between 66-88 lbs. The most common coloring is tan and black with black masks and bodies. Our Siberian Husky mixed breeds are in the 50-60 lb. range and they both have the black on their backs.
Personality
German Shepherds are active dogs and described in breed standards as self-assured. The breed is known for their drive to learn and desire for a purpose. Their curiosity makes them excellent guard dogs and often used for search and rescue. They can become over-protective of their family and territory if not socialized correctly. German Shepherds are a highly intelligent and obedient breed.
